Who should blog at a company? And what sort of guidelines should they follow?
Its easiest for blogging CEOs especially those like Jupiter Media CEO Alan Meckler who owns a big slug of his company for the help www.feedreaderlinks.com. Hes been blogging for a year and a half and gets several thousand page views a day. He says: Im the largest stock holder in my company. If I werent Id be more concerned about what the board would think A lot of people to do what Im doing would have to get check offs from the legal department and to cover their ass.

Meckler uses his blog to trade ideas and to hold up Jupiter’s brand in the blogosphere. He’s not shy about going on the attack.

But How about those of us who don’t sit in the corner office. Which of us should blog? Who does it right? Who doesn’t? I’d like to get some discussion on this. Meantime here are some useful pointers from Susan Solomon a marketing professor in California.

And for those with an extra minute for reading here are some more nuggets from Meckler. They’re from an interview we did for the cover story. Lots of interviews didn’t make it into the story. We’ll look for ways to slip bits and pieces into the blog.

How did the blog start?
Meckler: It looked like an interesting sort of way for the CEO to get the message out. I felt I could turn the blog into Internet media commentary for the help www.rssannouncers.com. I evolved over the next year
I now write more frequently. I write nearly every day from 50 to 300 or 400 words. Its therapeutic and beneficial for the company.

Is it frank?
Meckler: I call it the way I see it within reason. I write about what I think is happening on the Net. I try to weave in as often as I can how were doing as a company using it as a promotional tool. Im not trying to hide the fact.

BW: Does the PR staff oversee it?
Meckler: I am the PR department. I dont even have a secretary. I have an editorial director. Occasionally I will confer with him.

Will blogs be a big business?
Meckler: Im somewhat jaundiced about the real economic impact in terms of revenue. About 99.99 of all blogs are essentially worthless. Its another medium thats all it is.

Are the comments valuable for you?
Meckler: I just opened up recently comments on my blog. Some are very critical of me. Unfortunately spam has found its way to those comments. In any given day Ill get 20 to 30 comments. Four are valid the rest are spam.

What do you have to watch out for?
Meckler: Being a public company one has to be very careful. If I write about the company Im not giving away inside information. I dont write this to pump the stock.

Bias: A preference or an inclination especially one that inhibits impartial judgment.

What does this mean for you marketing a product you love?

But don’t mess with those biased against then you’re in the therapy zone.

Example 1: Say a gal markets nutritional supplements because SHE loves them and she’s had great results: she’s not dragging around like she used to.

Of course like the gal said on the call yesterday now she wants to save the tired people of the world.

Problem: They didn’t ask for her to come save them did they?

We are despite our own beliefs and biases for our product an uninvited guest.

Here’s how to get an invitation from those who are like you:

Begin by asking for people with the same biases as you.

Here are two biases from two different people: Which is going to be more fun for you to talk to unless you like to argue instead of get a customer:

A. “I believe that prescription medications are probably best.

B. “I know that nutritional supplements are necessary because the food doesn’t have enough nutrients anymore.”

Can you let go of A? unless you prefer doing therapy but don’t expect gratitude.

Example 2. Suzanne markets earthfriendly nontoxic household cleaners which she uses. Which person seems to have her bias?

“I think the traditional cleaners really work best and I don’t think those big companies would put toxins and chemicals in them that would harm us. The Government wouldn’t let them.”

“I worried for years that my regular cleaning products were making me sneeze and my kids get sniffles and breathing problems. So I’ve always been on the lookout for alternatives.”

So what’s bias got to do with it? Uhh everything.

Sitemeter A tracking tools that can give instant access to some vital information of your blog. Sitemeter will let you know the weekly performance of your blog with some useful information about your visitors.
Google Analytics a free tracking device from Google. Just like sitemeter it also gives the detailed information about the visitors of your blog.
Stat Counter another free tracking device that tracks your visitors. It is somewhat called an invisible web tracker.
My Blog Log this services is now part of yahoo. It also tracks visitors you can also add some widget where you can see the list of visitors that are also a member of Mybloglog.
